The Perks of Downsizing Your Home

Downsizing your home size can be a great way to save money if you don’t need the space, say, if you’re retired, if you’re an empty nester, or if you just don’t need as much space as you used to. Downsizing your home allows you to save money in various ways, and allows you to move to a home and area that better fits your changing needs (an open floor plan, a quieter area, etc.).

Here are some of the biggest perks of downsizing your home:

  1. Smaller homes require less maintenance, both inside and outside, usually. This means you save money on cleaning supplies, you save time by cutting down on chores, and you reduce the urge to impulse shop because you give yourself less space, and thus less places to put clutter and useless items.
  2. It’s much less expensive to heat and cool a smaller home than it is to heat or cool a bigger home. If you really want to avoid unnecessarily high energy bills, avoid buying homes with high cathedral-style ceilings, and only buy as much space as you need.
  3. In general, the smaller your home is, the smaller your monthly mortgage payment will be. So if you want to invest your money, or put it toward something other than a house payment, see if you can move to a smaller home.
  4. Moving to another home, and especially downsizing, allows you to de-clutter your home and your life. Let’s be honest, you’d rather throw out that pile of clothes that you don’t wear anymore than pack it up nicely in a box. So do it! Moving to a smaller space forces you to get rid of things you don’t really need, which can be very nice
  5. Downsizing has actually been shown to reduce finance-related stress, so if you’re stressed about money and you’re not using all the space you have now, downsizing may be a great move to make.

These are only some of the perks you’ll enjoy when you downsize your home. For more information on the upsides of downsizing, check out this article from US News.
